What is your name?
Andy Stevenson
What is your company called?
I have a couple of engineering companies called Ardmore Craig & Laytrix
What does your company do?
Ardmore Craig is a design engineering consultancy working in the offshore renewables and subsea sector. Laytrix is start up looking to develop innovative solutions for decommissioning old subsea pipelines.
Where is your company based (NE)?
Darlington
What job did you think you would do when you were at school?
I always wanted to go into engineering but thought I would have gone into motorsport design when I was at school
What subjects did you enjoy doing when you were at school?
Technology was my favourite but I also liked maths
How did you end up doing this job?
I went to university to study mechanical engineering after I left school and I really enjoyed my time there. I undertook a couple of placements when I was there gaining some experience of industry and then joined a company designing military aircraft when I graduated. I moved to the North East nearly 20 years for a job in offshore engineering and worked for a number of companies before setting up my own business over 10 years ago.
What do you do all day (describe a ‘typical day in a couple of sentences!)?
No day is ever the same, I get involved in developing ideas for clients to help solve their problems, bidding for new projects, working with our team on engineering challenges in our projects and a hundred and one other things!
What skills do you use most in your job?
Communication skills are important as I speak with customers, suppliers and team members on a daily basis. A good grasp of maths is important as I would use that in any design work and finally the ability to be creative and come up with solutions to problems – for me that’s what engineering is all about.
What advice would you give your eleven year old self?
You can do anything if you put your mind to it, don’t give up and don’t listen to negativity
What is the best bit about your job?
The fact that its varied and that I have been involved in so many different things, since setting up Ardmore Craig I have been involved in over 400 different projects which is an enormous amount of work with my ideas and creations turned into equipment which has been used all around the world.
